Swede Hollow Book Launch with Ola Larsmo

October 9 @ 7:00 pm

$15 – $20

The Minneapolis launch of Ola Larsmo’s Swede Hollow (translated by Tiina Nunnally and published by the University of Minnesota Press) includes a talk, reading, Q&A, reception and book signing. The story follows the journey of the Klar family as they leave their native Sweden and settle in a desolate immigrant enclave at the edge of St. Paul. There are hardships and indignities, but also acts of kindness and moments of joy. This haunting story of a real place echoes the larger challenges of immigration in the twentieth century and today.

Also included in the program is a performance of an aria from 2010 McKnight Composer Fellow Ann Millikan’s opera, SWEDE HOLLOW – a poignant story that weaves back and forth through time following the lives of Swedish, Italian and Mexican immigrants who made their home in Swede Hollow during its 100-year history – featuring Lukas Jaeger, baritone, and Mill City String Quartet, in a new arrangement from SCENE 3: “Swedes, 1850s.”
