Ragamala Dance Company & Brooklyn Rider

April 12 @ 7:30 pm

$30 – $34

Ragamala Dance Company presents a shared evening with acclaimed New-York based musical ensemble Brooklyn Rider, co-presented by O’Shaughnessy Auditorium. Both ensembles share a commitment to using family as an incubator to absorb and re-create their artistic lineage and maintaining the rigor of classical forms while evolving them into new generative paradigms.

Brooklyn Rider will open the evening with Healing Modes—a program inspired by the healing properties of music, which have been recognized from ancient Greek civilization to the field of modern neuroscience and expressed in countless global traditions. The slow movement of Beethoven’s Opus 132, a ‘Song of Holy Thanksgiving From a Convalescent to the Deity in the Lydian mode,’ is among the most profound expressions of healing in the string quartet repertoire. This autumnal masterwork is presented alongside five compact new commissions from women composers—Reena Esmail, Gabriela Lena Frank, Matana Roberts, and recent Pulitzer Prize winners Caroline Shaw and Du Yun—which explore the subject of healing from a wide range of historical/cultural perspectives.

In the second half of the program, Ragamala will present Nocturne, conceived and choreographed by Ashwini RamaswamyThe enigma of night—which conceals and liberates, frightens and absolves—is the universe of Nocturne. Steered by imagery found in the writings of Rabindranath Tagore, Jorge Luis Borges, and the Hindu Vedas, Nocturne is an homage to the natural, emotional, and spiritual migrations that occur after nightfall.
