Nada Presents: New Works For Unorthodox Loudspeaker Arrangements

July 26 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

“New Works For Unorthodox Loudspeaker Arrangements” re-examines the traditional model of stereo sound through an unusual loudspeaker configuration and new sound pieces by artists Michael M. Flora and Pooch Karton.

NWULA attempts to create an environment where sound is the primary focus of the experience and the focus is on the act of listening. Whereas the dominant consensus regarding stereo sound recommends a fixed and central “sweet spot,” NWULA encourages the auditor to move about the room and examine their relationship to space in regards to what they are hearing.

Michael Masaru Flora is a Minneapolis based artist working with sound in various contexts. Within the intersections of art, science, music, and mathematics, he creates work that examines sonic morphology, spatialization, and human perception. Flora’s practice includes installation, performance, recording, and curation as well as numerous collaborations with artists in the fields of transdisciplinarity, visual arts, dance, and performance art. His work has been presented at Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), St Cloud State University (Minnesota) as well as clubs, galleries, theaters, warehouses, and universities throughout North America. His split EP with Pooch Karton “Mu/Winter Makes Skulls Quick” is forthcoming on Nada.

Pooch Karton is the nom de guerre of Christian Langheinrich, a multidisciplinary artist born in Chicago in 1970. Although his primary interest is now sound, a background in theater and a long standing involvement in literary and visual art inform his practice, where playful invention is always the beginning point. His current work, which delights in complex and rough sounds arranged in detailed and often fast moving phrases, explores the transformation of sound identity and image, fractal scaling, what we perceive as order/randomness, and the artist’s role in generative systems. He has released work on the Dream Disc label (as Pooch Karton), has a forthcoming release on Nada (which he helps run), has composed music and sound for film, theater and installation work, and is currently working on a piece entitled “10,000 Fractal Shorelines.” Above all, Pooch Karton seeks to be like the pyrotechnist, who from a distance attempts to entertain and overwhelm the senses with new forms that appear in the dark.
