Mankato Symphony: Music on the Hill “Contemplation”
March 5, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm$12 – $20
Franck’s Violin Sonata is one of his best known works and one of the finest sonatas every written for violin and piano. It was composed for Eugene Ysaye, a legendary violinist, and presented to him on his wedding day. Ysaye championed the work by performing it frequently during his storied 40 year career. Beethoven’s “Ghost” Trio received its nickname from a student of Beethoven as he said the slow movement reminded him of the ghost of Hamlet’s father. This comparison was quite appropriate as Beethoven was working on an opera of Shakespeare’s Macbeth at the time and the word Macbeth appears in the score. Also featured on this program is a work by American composer Nico Muhly, one of the most sought-after composers of his generation, with commissions by such organizations as the Metropolitan Opera and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Common Ground combines contemporary technique with that of Purcell to create an amazing sound world. Bach’s Cello Suites are pieces that have been loved by audiences for hundreds of years. The chapel is the ideal setting for a most memorable performance!
