Laura Kaminsky Master Class
October 11 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pmFREE
This event features Laura Kaminsky, the composer of the opera As One, a scene from which will be presented in the Collage Concert at 7:30pm on October 11 in the Ted Mann Concert Hall. Ms. Kaminsky will discuss the opera and the issues it raises and answer questions about her journey as a woman composer of opera.
As One is a chamber opera in which two voices—Hannah after (mezzo-soprano) and Hannah before (baritone)—share the part of a sole transgender protagonist. Fifteen songs comprise the three-part narrative; with empathy and humor, they trace Hannah’s experiences from her youth in a small town to her college years—and finally traveling alone to a different country, where she realizes some truths about herself.
Commissioned by American Opera Projects, As One opened on September 4, 2014, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Fisher Space. Since its premiere, it has become the most produced new opera in North America, according to Opera America magazine.
This event will feature a prominent American woman composer of opera and will be presented by University Opera Theatre in partnership with the American Composers Forum and Minnesota Opera Education Department. It is intended to attract a broad audience from within the University, as well as from the larger Twins Cities musical community.
