Dil-e-Nadaan (O’ Naive Heart!)
July 27 @ 7:00 pm$20
A rare treat is in store for Twin Citians! Hindustani (North Indian classical) vocalist and composer, Dr. Pooja Goswami Pavan, will perform Ghazals (art songs of love) on Saturday, July 27 in Bloomington. Pooja’s five-member ensemble will present both, traditional and new, musical interpretations of the poetry of the iconic, most celebrated Urdu poet, Mirza Ghalib (1797 – 1869), drawing upon the tonal contours of Indian classical and semi-classical music. The ensemble includes highly accomplished artists from India and the USA, performing on the Sarangi, Harmonium and Tabla, alongside Pooja. Professor Mehr Farooqi (University of Virginia), renowned scholar of Ghalib’s works, will provide live interpretation of the poetry in this concert.
The Ghazal provides a verbally-delectable insight into the myriad hues of love, and Ghalib’s poetry in particular, presents the lover as one torn by conflicting forces, of agony and ecstasy, fulfillment and longing, and surrender and pride. The Ghazal’s rhyme, rhythm and meter, when overlaid on the rich soundscapes of Indian classical music, make for a bewitching experience. In her brilliant Ghazal album “How Shall I Say”, Pooja offered us a glimpse of this magic. More of the same can be expected at this live concert.
