Curator Ritika Ganguly* and The Cedar Cultural Center invite music makers in any genre interested in unusual time signatures to showcase their work in the first-ever Odd Measures Even-ing taking place at The Cedar on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at 7:30pm.

The goal of Odd Measures Even-ing is to celebrate unusual time signatures from artistic traditions around the world. It will feature artists that think creatively around odd rhythmic cycles through vocal or instrumental exploration, through original compositions and traditional folk pieces.

To expand access to all musicians, artists, and poets, there will be an open audition for the Odd Measures Even-ing showcase on Thursday, August 22 from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm and Saturday, August 24 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm at The Cedar Cultural Center, 416 Cedar Avenue, Minneapolis MN.

Q: Who is this audition for?
A: We’re looking for anyone interested in exploring unusual musical time signatures, whether that’s through poetry, experimental jazz, traditional folk songs, choir vocals, or something else. If an aspect of your work features odd time signatures, we’re interested!

Q: When do I need to be available to be part of the showcase?
If your piece is selected, you must be available for a three-hour tech rehearsal during the morning of Saturday, November 7, as well as 3:30 pm – 10:30 pm on the showcase day, Thursday, November 14.

Q: What will the structure of the final showcase be like?
A: We’re looking for 6-8 soloists or groups to take part in the showcase. At the showcase, each soloist or group will perform 1-3 songs. You could interpret an existing piece of music in an odd time signature, or compose something new to perform. It will be a seated show.

Q: Is the piece I audition with the piece I’ll be performing on November 14?
A: Yes. The content of your audition piece does not need to be a fully fleshed-out and final product, but you will be required to present a sample of the structure and form of your final piece.

Q: How will artists performing at the showcase be compensated?
A: Artists will be paid a flat fee of $300-400 depending on the number of showcase participants, plus a split of income from ticket sales.

A: Auditions and the final performance will all take place at The Cedar, located at 416 Cedar Avenue, Minneapolis MN 55454.

Please only sign up for one slot. Audition time slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and are scheduled in 15-minute intervals.

Q: When should I arrive for my audition?
A: Please plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your audition slot. When you arrive, check-in with the front desk attendant so we can get you signed in.

Q: What technical support will you provide during the audition?
A: During the audition, we will have our PA set up with two vocal mics and two additional inputs. If you need to amplify an electric instrument, please plan to bring a small amp or plug directly into the PA. Due to the short time between audition slots, we will not be able to provide amplification for ensembles with more than two electric instruments. If your ensemble is larger, consider playing acoustically, or submitting a video instead of auditioning live.

Q: Is The Cedar’s stage and venue accessible to wheelchair users?
A: The Cedar has a single-unit all-gender wheelchair accessible restroom in the lobby. The Cedar’s property is almost entirely on the ground level, but there are five steps up to The Cedar stage. We can place a ramp up to the stage for wheelchair access. If you have any questions or requests, please reach out to ahorton@thecedar.org and we will do our best to accommodate.

Q: I’m not available during the audition slots. Can I submit a video proposal?
A: Yes, video submissions are accepted, although a live audition is preferred. To submit a video, please send a password-protected online link with a description of the piece to ganguly.ritika@gmail.com no later than August 24.
