SPCO Performs Claude Vivier’s “Zipangu”
September 14 @ 8:00 pm
One event on September 15, 2018 at 8:00pm
Former SPCO Artistic Partner Thomas Zehetmair returns to conduct a program spanning nearly 250 years of music history. The oldest work on the program, Jean-Féry Rebel’s The Elements offers a French Baroque take on the creation of the universe, beginning with a shockingly modern and dissonant introductory movement: Chaos. In contrast, French-Canadian composer Claude Vivier’s 1983 entry entitled Zipangu has an ancient, primordial feeling throughout the work. SPCO violinist Eunice Kim opens the program as soloist on Beethoven’s Romance No. 1, and the program closes with Haydn’s sole London symphony in a minor key.
