Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13, “Babi Yar” & Linda Tutas Haugen’s “Anne Frank: A Living Voice”
February 18 @ 4:00 pmFREE
Featuring bass-baritone Carl Ratner and Duo Furioso, as well as pianists Silvia Roederer and Leslie Tung. The bass section of the University Chamber Singers will collaborate with singers from the Twin Cities community to premiere Shostakovich’s own version for piano duo and bass choir of his powerful and timely Symphony No. 13, based on “Babi Yar” and other poetry by Yevgeny Yevtushenko.
The University Women’s Chorus and Chamber Singers Women will perform Anne Frank: A Living Voice by Minnesota composer Linda Tutas Haugen. An emotional tour de force, this multi-movement work is based on selected excerpts from The Diary of Anne Frank. Spanning more than two years of hiding in the annex, the texts and music portray a psychological progression from fear and despair to strength and hope for women’s choir and string quartet.
A doctoral recital conducted by Ahmed Anzaldúa and Kira Winter.
