Maithree the Music of Friendship Album Release

October 28 @ 3:00 pm

$12 - $15

Nirmala Rajasekar is a world renowned Carnatic virtuoso recognized as one of the best Saraswathi veena players of today in the South Indian Classical music genre – a consummate artist who has carved a special place amidst audiences across the globe. She has been performing on her beloved ‘veena’ for 38 years now. She has created and performed in many path breaking collaborations in the company of many phenomenal and well known world musicians across genres. She has been described in the media as a “Carnatic Ambassador.” Nirmala is known for her unique presentations that carry her distinct voice and style. She is the recipient of many awards including a Bush Artistic Fellowship, a McKnight Performer Fellowship, a Rotary Excellence Award, Women of Excellence award, and more.

MAITHREE, the music of friendship, is a testament to Rajasekar’s belief in the power of the arts to build community: “Now, more than ever, we need music to bring us together, to remember what we have in common while celebrating what makes us different.” The ensemble MAITHREE was formed when Rajasekar invited friends to play music together, each bringing expertise in different musical traditions. The music that they made forged new bonds of love and respect, and deepened their understanding of each other and their cultures. MAITHREE features original music, along with new arrangements of Indian, Irish, and Turkish tunes.

This performance will celebrate the release of her new collaborative album, Maithree the Music of Friendship, produced by Innova Records (American Composers Forum) and featuring music and instruments from around the world. Every musician on the album is a master of the genre and their instruments. The album features Nirmala Rajasekar (Saraswathi veena and vocals), along with Thanjavur Murgaboopathi (Mridangam, Ghatam, Khanjira), Michelle Kinney (Cello), Pat O’ Keefe (Clarinet, Saxophone), and Tim O’ Keefe (Harmonica, Bongos, various Middle eastern Drums), all of whom will be performing live for the performance.
